Economizers are mechanical devices that can reduce energy consumption or perform a useful function such as preheating a fluid.
In a steam boiler, economiser is a heat exchanger device to heat up fluids or recover residual heat from the combustion product i.e. flue gasses in a thermal power plant before being delivered outside through the chimney. Flue gasses are the combustion exhaust gasses generated at power plants consisting of mostly nitrogen, carbon dioxide, water vapor, soot, carbon monoxide etc. Hence, the Economizer in thermal power plants is intended to economize the process of electrical power production. The recovered heat is in turn utilized to preheat the boiler feed water, that will eventually be turned into superheated steam.
Applications of Economizer
It is applied now in all modern plants. The use of economizers leads to saving fuel consumption and increasing steaming rate and boiler efficiency.
In steam power plants it is used to capture the waste heat from boiler stack gasses (flue gasses) and transfer it to the boiler feed water. Air-side economizers HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Condition) is intended to save energy in buildings by using cool outside air as a way of cooling the indoor space. Refrigeration: This is commonly seen in industrial refrigeration where vapor compression refrigeration is necessary. Systems with economizers aim to generate part of the refrigeration functions at high pressures, a condition in which gas compressors are normally more effective.
Advantages and Benefits of Economizer
Econoisers by O’Brien Boiler Services Pty Ltd recover more heat of flue gasses which normal air pre-heater is unable to do. Due to the raise in fuel prices, all power plants are experiencing pressure for increasing boiler effectiveness. So with the economizer, this pressure can be minimized. Power plants where it is not applied, a large quantity of water is needed to cool the flue gas before desulphurization which is minimized by using economizers.
